| I began by knitting a scarf to try out the techniques before committing myself to a jacket.
The scarf is very long and noils yarn was used for fringing. The jacket was knitted in my favourite sideways on style-the back, knitted in both directions from a centre back cast on uses a yarn of noils, spun long draw, plied with a plain dyed silk cap. The fronts used a mixed yarn, with the noils inserted three times in the course of knitting one square. The noils part of the yarn was knitted in fairly long inserts with a use of short rows. The sleeves used a yarn with two insertions of noils so that the work was more open. The sleeves are very long! |

| I dyed some squares in pale versions of the main colours and spun these very finely. I knitted a lace collar and cuffs. The buttons are very light shell- the only ones that would not weigh the knitting down. |

| As well as this style, in which I knitted a scarf and jacket, I explored using strips of torn silk fabric- inspired by a talk which the knitter and designer Bill King, gave to our Guild.
I dyed the silk and tore it in to strips and knitted them also using dyed squares, spun and plyed in the Navaho manner to keep the colours separate. I made a scarf, using strips of silk chiffon, which take the dye so beautifully. I knitted it on the side knitting the chiffon and suing some more open stitches with the silk yarn. The result was a fabric with a beautiful feel, bouncy and lively. |

| I knitted another scarf using mainly white chiffon and a merino/silk mix yarn and gave it a huge fringe. |

| The jacket using the fabric strips consisted of four identical sections, knitted on the side; I then picked up stitches to knit the under arm area, the centre back-joined with a knitted seam- and the fronts. I used the fabric to knit round the sleeves and neckline, which gave a lovely firm edge. I used dyed habotai silk in a medium weight for this garment. | ||||||||

| The collection looked great. I owe a lot to my tutors, Geraldine Brock for my first year and Sue Lancaster for the rest of my time, and my lovely fellow students who cheered me on and inspired me all the way. I had certainly achieved my goal - I am now going in a new direction. After my work was moderated I was invited to be a Licentiate of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and to my great pleasure was asked to exhibit in their Winter Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London from Jan 29th February 9th 2003 | ||||||||
